“ The Clay Mathematics Institute hereby awards the Millennium Prize for resolution of the Poincaré conjecture to Grigoriy Perelman.
(…)
The Poincaré conjecture is one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems established by CMI in 2000. The Prizes were conceived to record some of the most difficult problems with which mathematicians were grappling at the turn of the second millennium; to elevate in the consciousness of the general public the fact that in mathematics, the frontier is still open and abounds in important unsolved problems; to emphasize the importance of working towards a solution of the deepest, most difficult problems; and to recognize achievement in mathematics of historical magnitude. “

Actualização: em dailymail.co.uk, no artigo World’s cleverest man turns down $1million prize after solving one of mathematics’ greatest puzzles, de Will Stewart, Last updated at 11:32 AM on 23rd March 2010, lê-se: “A Russian awarded $1million (£666,000) for solving one of the most intractable problems in mathematics said yesterday that he does not want the money.”
Nova actualização (25.03.10, 0.23 AM) – lê-se num comentário de ontem ao artigo do dailymail.co.ok :
“There are reports this morning saying that Dr. Perelman has not in fact turned down the prize; he just hasn’t decided.”

International Congress of Mathematicians Madrid 2006 Fields Medals announcements
“ Fields Medal:
Grigory Perelman
CITATION: “For his contributions to geometry and his revolutionary insights into the analytical and “geometric structure of the Ricci flow”
The name of Grigory Perelman is practically a household word among the scientifically interested public. His work from 2002-2003 brought groundbreaking insights into the study of evolution equations and their singularities.
Most significantly, his results provide a way of resolving two outstanding problems in topology: the Poincare Conjecture and the Thurston Geometrization Conjecture. As of the summer of 2006, the mathematical community is still in the process of checking his work to ensure that it is entirely correct and that the conjectures have been proved. After more than three years of intense scrutiny, top experts have encountered no serious problems in the work.
For decades the Poincaré Conjecture has been considered one of the most important problems in mathematics. The conjecture received increased attention from the general public when it was named as one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems established by the Clay Mathematics Institute in 2000. The institute has pledged to award a prize of one-million US dollars for the solution of each problem. The work of Perelman on the Poincaré Conjecture is the first serious contender for one of these prizes. “
P.S. Em Dezembro 13, 2007 publiquei umas notas que tomei da conferência do Prof. Marcelo Viana em 12.12.07, na Gulbenkian, sobre a conjectura de Poincaré e Perelman.
